关于这个《古典名曲选集》，我们不得不提及BBC的一个节目。《百首挚爱经典》(Your Hundred Best Tunes)曾经是英国广播公司BBC的一个历时悠长的电台音乐节目，它从1959年11月开播到2007年1月封咪停播，其间走过了将近半个世纪的风雨历程。该节目每逢星期天晚上播出，播出时段及时长曾几经调整，但从1961年3月起均固定在星期天晚9-10点这个时段播出。它以介绍、播放及评述古典乐选段、合唱、歌剧、舞剧等作品为主，深受广大听众的喜爱。

艾伦·基思作为广播界最年长的节目主持人以及BBC工龄最长的员工，曾出书介绍过《百首挚爱经典》节目里播出过的音乐作品。BBC公司按以上这个最后的投票结果出版了一套6碟的音乐CD。另外，Decca公司也曾根据多次的投票结果和排行情况，成功地推出过一套名为“The World of Your 100 Best Tunes”的九卷黑胶唱片。此次发布的《古典名曲选集》，便是重新翻制的其中五张。
